Job Title: Graphic Designer

The Whatcom Symphony Orchestra is seeking a Graphic Designer to work in conjunction with our small team to help the organization continue to fulfill its mission to perform music of all ages to audiences of all ages!

Position Goal: The Graphic Designer will design and create original content, which articulates the mission and programs of the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra (soon to be the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra) to maximize exposure, attendance, and contributed revenue.

Position Summary: The Graphic Designer will work within established brand guidelines to create original content for the purpose of marketing the concerts, events, and programs of the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, including but not limited to season brochures, mailings, posters, programs, web content, print advertisements, and web advertisements. The Graphic Designer will also assist with creating design content for other departments and facilitate the rebranding of the organization as the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra on an as needed basis.

Supervisory Relationships: Reports to the External Relations Manager.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Create and design graphics for season materials including:
  • Season brochures
  • Season postcards
  • Season poster
  • Remit envelopes
  • Concert posters (6-8 per year)
  • Window posters (3-4 per year)
  • Concert programs (6-8 per year)
  • Concert slides for pre-concert slideshows
  • Lobby posters
  • Flyers and program inserts
  • Banners and icons for ticket sales webpages
  • Original content for Facebook and Twitter
  • Development brochures and event materials
  • Monthly and quarterly advertisements (digital and print)
  • Rebranding-related tasks as needed
  • Additional advertisements as needed
  1. Work with External Relations Manager to meet the organization’s graphic design needs
  • Independently incorporate copy from External Relations Manager into designs, making suggestions as necessary
  • Work with External Relations Manager to create, contribute, and follow a design calendar with regular deadlines
  • Submit final artwork to advertisers as requested
  • Upload final artwork to Google Drive
  • Provide design elements as requested to External Relations Manager for use in email marketing
  1. Create original artwork that articulates the organization’s mission in adherence with organization’s brand guidelines and existing brand elements
  • Incorporate existing brand elements (logos, typography, etc) into designs
  • Learn and adhere to existing brand guidelines

Performance Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of graphic design -- tools, methods, and community resources.
  • Skills and abilities in planning and organizing, problem solving and decision-making, adaptability/flexibility, composure and self-control.
  • Demonstrated time management skills and ability to balance multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A combination of 3 years education and experience in graphic design, with nonprofit, performing arts, or classical music experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated work history as a self-motivated and proactive employee with the ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Illustrator or similar software as well as a working knowledge of the Google Suite.
  • Familiarity with Asana task management software a plus.

Hours and Working Conditions:

  • This is an independent contractor position.

This is an independent contractor position with compensation DOE. Time commitment may fluctuate, but the position is estimated at fewer than 10 hours per week on average. Working conditions are routine for an office environment.
