Choral music returns to our annual holiday celebration!
Featuring local children's choirs singing accompaniment to Home Alone and holiday favorites, as well as the vocals of the Whatcom Chorale on a special piece composed by Scott Henderson. Hot cocoa & marshmallows for the kids at intermission, as well as holiday carols performed by student musicians!
Arnaud Sussmann, violin
With a beautiful sound and elegance reminiscent of great violinists of the past, Arnaud Sussmann solos on Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 (Turkish), one of Mozart’s most popular works. We finish the afternoon with Hindemith's Metamorphosis and Overture to Oberon by Carl Maria von Weber.
Philip Fisher, piano
Philip Fisher hails originally from Britain and studied at both the Royal Conservatory of Music and Juilliard in NYC. As a youth, he performed this Shostakovich piano concerto for Maxim Shostakovich, himself. Scheherazade is considered Rimsky-Korsakov's most popular work, and is based on "One Thousand and One Nights," sometimes known as "The Arabian Nights."
We are very pleased to be partnering with Mount Baker Theatre for our traditional Family Concert, which this year will be one of their Educational Program series for students throughout Whatcom County.
We will be performing the beloved Carnival of the Animals,a humorous musical suite by the French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns. Additional features will include:
4th grade poetry competition to rewrite animal poems
Dancers to depict animals
Collaboration with Allied Arts to provide art work and music in schools
High School Concerto Competition
Joining us for Carmina Burana are Dawn Wolski, soprano, José Luis Muñoz, tenor, and Charles Robert Stephens, baritone; and multiple WWU Choirs. We will have a huge orchestra, two pianos and celeste, large percussion section, three outstanding soloists, and over 150 singers from Western Washington University, for the largest number of musicians we have ever had on stage.
