WHATCOM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Pre-Concert Lecture Series

Dr. Edward Rutschman presents his insight during pre-concert lectures, an hour before each Classical concert. Dr. Rutschman's musicological articles have been published in the U.S. and in Italy, and his compositions have been performed in the U.S., Canada, Germany, and Turkey. He is a recipient of the Bellingham Mayor's Arts Award and of Western Washington University's highest teaching award, the Excellence in Teaching.

Each pre-concert lecture begins an hour before the concert in the Mount Baker Theatre's Encore Room. Admission is free but seating is limited. Arrive early and enjoy a discussion that's guaranteed to enhance your enjoyment of the performance. (Pre-concert lectures are not presented before the Pops and Holiday concerts.)

See Outreach and Education for details.

Young Composers Project

The Whatcom Symphony Orchestra announces a call for scores by young composers, high school aged or younger, residing in the state of Washington. The winner of the competition receives a composition lesson with visiting composer Adam Hill on the weekend of March 24-25, 2012, and wins tickets to hear the WSO premiere of Mr. Hill’s latest work on March 25, 2012 at 3pm at the Mount Baker Theatre. The winning composition will be given a reading by the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra and will be considered for future performance opportunities.

Guidelines: Composers are allowed to submit one work in any style for any instrumentation. Applications must be received by March 1, 2012.

Details of the competition can be seen on the Application form.
