Scottish Symphony & Sibelius

October 8, 2017 @ 3:00 pm

Mount Baker Theatre

We open our 42nd season with rising star Benjamin Beilman, known for his intense and simmering perfect sound. Described by the New York Times for “his soaring tone, range of color and sotto voce contrasts,” as well as for his “delicate, wistful rendition of Kreisler’s “Liebesleid,” he is the ideal soloist for Sibelius’s romantic and lush Violin Concerto.

The repertoire also features Mendelssohn’s lively & spirited Scottish Symphony. In 1829, he wrote to his family:

“In the deep twilight we went today to the palace where Queen Mary lived and loved… The chapel below is now roofless. Grass and ivy thrive there… Everything is ruined, decayed, and the clear heavens pour in. I think I have found there the beginning of my ‘Scottish’ Symphony.”

Finishing with elements from Scottish folk dance, this work is an original contribution to the 19th century symphonies.

Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten – Arvo Pärt
Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47 – Jean Sibelius
Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 56 (Scottish) – Felix Mendelssohn

A pre-concert lecture about the repertoire by Dr. Ryan Dudenbostel starts at 2:15pm (Please note time change.) Admission is free; but these are very popular, and fill fast!
