Atlanta, Georgia. June 18, 2010
The Whatcom Symphony Orchestra was recognized with a 2009-2010 ASCAP Award for Programming at the League of American Orchestras’ 65th Annual Conference. ASCAP and the League present the awards each year to orchestras of all sizes for programs that build the repertoire and increase interest in music of our time.
Artistic Administrator Pat Nelson, along with Conductor and Artistic Director Roger Briggs, accepted the award that recognizes the orchestra's recent season. The 2009-2010 season featured programming of American music, beginning with Leonard Bernstein, Irving Berlin and George Gershwin showcased in the first concert of the year. The season also featured premieres by American composers, including Samuel Adler's All Nature Plays and a new piece by Maestro Briggs himself. ASCAP also noted the WSO's performance of The Composer Is Dead by Nathaniel Stookey, the highlight of the 2010 Family Concert.
