Board of Directors & Staff
Becky Elmendorf has enjoyed playing viola in community and university orchestras across the United States for more than 50 years. Born into a musical family, she first studied violin then viola with her father, a conductor who studied with the famous Pierre Monteux. After earning her Bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Indiana State University, Becky did her Master’s at Stanford University, married and began teaching in Southern California. The Elmendorfs moved to Bellingham when her husband, Byron, was named the city’s first Parks and Recreation Director in 1978. She joined the WSO at that time. This gave her the opportunity to continue playing great music as she had done in Indiana, California, Arizona, and Michigan. The couple raised a son and a daughter here. Becky finished 27 years of teaching math in all of those states, including 19 at Whatcom Middle School and Bellingham High School, when she became a principal in 1998, opening Squalicum High School. Since her retirement in 2004, Becky and Byron have spent quality time with their four grandchildren and travelled extensively in Italy, Peru, Ecuador, Greece, Croatia, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Tahiti, Russia, Estonia, and Finland. In 2010 they fulfilled a promise of 40 years ago to themselves by running the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. The Elmendorfs are great fans of our National Parks, having spent time in 31 of them. Becky joined the WSO Board of Directors in 2008, served as Vice President, and became President of the Board in 2011. She has great enthusiasm for this fine organization and is honored to both play the music and help oversee its operation. |
